Athlete's foot is a fungal infection of our skin. Fungus normally lives on our skin, but
in certain environments, fungus can flourish. Athlete's foot is also contagious, so you
can be exposed to the fungus and, as a result, develop athlete's foot.
What are the signs and symptoms? Moisture between the toes can commonly lead to athlete's
foot. It usually appears as wet and moist area with dry, scaling skin around the periphery.
Athlete's foot can also appear as red and scaling, particularly on the bottom of the
foot, and can take on a moccasin distribution.
Athlete's foot is typically very itchy and uncomfortable. You may develop small blisters
in the area.
Athlete's foot can be a serious condition. The fungus changes the environment of your
skin, decreasing your good bacteria and increasing your bad bacteria. This can lead to a serious
bacterial infection.
If you have diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or have a compromised immune system,
seek medical attention immediately.
