I get this question a lot. How do you pronounce this word?
In this video we're going to look at this and some other alternative pronunciations.
Now in English some words have different pronunciations according to where they are spoken in the
English speaking world. There are many words that are pronounced differently in British
and American English. for example. AluMINium that's British and aLUminum that's American.
or vase [vayse] that's American English and vase [varse] that's British english
There are a lot of regional differences too. within Britain This word. For example I'm from London
so I say blood [BLUD] but in the north of England it'll be pronounced blood. Similarly it's
bath [BARTH]in the south and bath in the north. However, there are a few words in British English that
just have 2 equal pronunciations. It's not a regional thing there
are just 2 pronunciations and both are correct
Either is one of those words. You can say either [e-ther] or either [i-ther] - no difference.
You can say neither or neither. Is there any time when you'd pronounce it
one way or not the other? not really, I guess maybe for the sound you might choose one over
for example either a driver or a diver
he's neither a teacher nor a preacher But generally no just say whichever one you want
As for the other words with alternative pronunciations in British English anyway.
Garage [gardige] - garage garage is closer to the French where the word comes from
envelope [en-volope] - envelope [on-velope] also closer to the French privacy [pry-vacy] - privacy [pri-vacy]
scone [scon] scone - that's a type of cake.
Just one final thing there are a few American words which are starting to be pronounced
In the American way in Britain
which leaves us with 2 pronunciations.
so for example CONtroversy that's the traditional British way but now
some British people are saying conTROversy which is the American pronunciation. Or adVERTtiisement
that's the British way but you now some British people are saying like the American advertISEment.
You also have often ans schedule this but that's controversial and in fact
I've made some videos about that and I'll put a link in the description.
Ok I hope that cleared up any confusion Thank you for watching more English language videos
coming soon.
