  • - We have to go and put out that fire!

  • Left!

  • There we are, stop the car!

  • Pshh!

  • Oh, and there's a little kid stuck in Addie's house!

  • - Oh my goodness!

  • Did you bring a ladder?

  • (cute music)

  • - My name is Lucas.

  • - Hi Lucas.

  • - Hello, my name is Sari.

  • - Hi Sari, I'm Anne.

  • - It's nice to meet you, Anne, my name is Crystal Anne.

  • - No way!

  • - Are you a firefighter?

  • - I am a firefighter.

  • Do you know what firefighters do?

  • - They fight fire.

  • - They do, that's great.

  • What else do firefighters do?

  • - They go save people in the movies.

  • - They also come with police.

  • - That's true.

  • We help people who get into car crashes,

  • we do CPR on people,

  • if someone has fallen over a cliff or something

  • we can rescue them.

  • I've had to do the Heimlich maneuver on someone before.

  • Do you know what that is?

  • - Nope.

  • - Okay.

  • - Do you like being a firefighter?

  • - I love being a firefighter.

  • I get to play with things like chainsaws and fire hoses.

  • - I wish I could play with a chainsaw.

  • - You can when you're older.

  • You can be a firefighter and play with a chainsaw.

  • - Why can't I just do it now?

  • - Chainsaws are kind of dangerous.

  • - How long have you been a firefighter?

  • - I've been a firefighter for three years.

  • - That's a long time.

  • - You know what, it doesn't feel like that long.

  • It goes by so fast because it's super fun.

  • I've been to two firefighter schools,

  • that's how much I loved it.

  • - What truck to you ride in?

  • - It's called a ladder truck and it's the one

  • with the big ladder on top that you can raise

  • up and extend.

  • - Oh I have one of those.

  • - How many tools do you have to make fires out?

  • - You want me to bring out some tools for you?

  • - Yeah!

  • - What is that?

  • - This is a pick head ax.

  • Careful, it's super heavy.

  • So this thing is called a halligan and so we would

  • use this to force entry into a building

  • if someone's door is locked and we can't get in.

  • Careful, two hands.

  • Super heavy.

  • (groaning)

  • Yeah.

  • Like that.

  • - Hello!

  • (giggling)

  • - Hello?

  • - Can you hear him?

  • - Hello!

  • - This flows hundreds and hundreds of gallons per minute.

  • Yeah.

  • - How many people hold the hose at one time?

  • - On the last fire I was on, I was the only person

  • holding the hose.

  • - Whoa.

  • - I know.

  • - How do you be a firefighter?

  • - You have to be really strong and you have to be

  • really physically fit so you have to work out all the time.

  • - What's the best part of your job?

  • - So when people are having really bad days,

  • I get to be the one who comes in and helps them

  • solve their problem.

  • - I was asking my mom in the car

  • if girls could be firefighters.

  • - You were?

  • And what did she say?

  • - She said yes.

  • - Yeah, she's right.

  • Girls can be firefighters.

  • - How many other women work with you?

  • - There are seven women who work at my fire department.

  • - How many boys?

  • - About 130.

  • - What in the world?

  • - What do you do with your hair when you're

  • doing your job?

  • - Just like that.

  • How it's gonna fit under my helmet and my mask, see?

  • - Have you ever saved anyone?

  • - I've never had to pull someone out of a burning building

  • but I have had to help a lot of people who are sick.

  • - Have you ever saved any animals?

  • - I have not saved any animals.

  • - Maybe you could save a baby fish.

  • - [Anne] I bet I could.

  • - But it would have to call you first.

  • (laughing)

  • - I've never seen a fish using a phone.

  • You're right, do you know the number to call

  • if you need help?

  • - 911.

  • - That's exactly right.

  • - You have any fire safety tips?

  • - Make sure you have smoke detectors in your house.

  • - Oh yes, I have one in my bedroom, one downstairs,

  • one in my grandma's room, one in my baby's room

  • and one in the bathroom and one in the other bathroom

  • and one in (unclear).

  • - So you hear the smoke detectors going off,

  • you know what those sound like?

  • It's really loud.

  • You ready?

  • - Yeah.

  • (loud beeping)

  • - Stay low and crawl under the smoke right?

  • Because it's hotter the higher up you go.

  • Get out of your house as fast as you can

  • and go to a neighbor's house and call 911.

  • Don't play with matches or lighters because

  • those things start fires, right?

  • - Yeah.

  • - What's your favorite food?

  • - Firefighters, we love ice cream.

  • - You get ice cream a lot?

  • - Yes we do.

  • All of our freezers are stocked with ice cream all the time.

  • We work for 24 hours at a time so for a whole day.

  • - Then how do you sleep?

  • - At 10 o'clock at night we can go to bed but we have

  • these big

  • - Sirens?

  • - Sirens in the ceiling, yep.

  • So when we get a call, the noise goes off

  • so everyone has to wake up and we're all in our pajamas

  • and we have to run out to the firetruck and go on the call.

  • - Have you ever caught on fire before?

  • - I have never caught on fire at work

  • because my special gear protects me and doesn't

  • let me catch on fire.

  • Do you want to see the gear?

  • - Yeah!

  • - All this stuff.

  • - Wow.

  • - What do you think?

  • - That is a lot.

  • - It's kind of heavy.

  • - It's heavy.

  • - I know, it's heavy huh?

  • And then your goggles come down like this.

  • - I'm mister fireman.

  • - Can I put on the stuff?

  • - I'll show you how to do it then you do it after me,

  • how about that?

  • - How long does it take to put all that stuff on?

  • - Usually less than a minute.

  • Okay, this is called a ladder belt so if I'm ever climbing

  • up the big ladder on top of the truck I can

  • hook into one of these big loops.

  • - [Girl] So you don't fall?

  • - Exactly.

  • - And when you have to go to the bathroom

  • and you're wearing the gear?

  • - [Anne] You have to hold it.

  • - Oh.

  • - So then this is called a hood.

  • This protects my ears and my neck from getting burned.

  • You put this on.

  • - And there's a button you can breathe through

  • whenever it goes onto fire.

  • How can you see in a fire?

  • - Usually by turning on my flashlight.

  • - I can try?

  • - You wanna try it?

  • You want to put on my mask?

  • Sure.

  • This is going to go over the back of your head.

  • Keep going, there you go.

  • Is it okay?

  • - You can hear me?

  • You can hear me?

  • - I am Darth Vader.

  • You are on the dark side.

  • - Wiggle wiggle.

  • - This is really heavy.

  • - Yes it is.

  • Hold your head up!

  • (laughter)

  • do you think they fit you?

  • - Yep.

  • (laughter)

  • Oh jeez and crackers that's heavy!

  • - One more.

  • You're ready.

  • How do you feel?

  • - Heavy.

  • (laughter)

  • - Do you love your job?

  • - I love my job.

  • I think it's the best job in the world

  • and I feel so lucky to be able to do it.

  • - Thank you, Anna!

  • - You're welcome.

  • - And I'll clap for you.

  • (clapping)

  • - It was nice to meet you, Anne.
