Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hi! This is Ray. Today I'm gonna tell you 3 websites can help you make a habit of reading Do you still remember what is the very first English article you ever read? To many people, English reading is the same thing as "reading test" which means after you finished your reading, you have to pick up a correct answer from ABCD so you can imagine that many people do not have a habit of reading, and are not interested in it what's worse, whenever they see English words, their heads will hurt, their eyes, their knees, their whole bodies will hurt but I believe English is an enjoyable thing like my sister, she like to read English novels. This is how she enjoys reading and you can see there are a ton of novels behind me Oh, as for this, our background are all real There are many people questioned like if it is computer generated image. No it is real (pop up) but I'm seldom read English novels, they are too heavy and they have so many pages, it takes lots of time to finish them Yeah it may sound like I am a lazy, OK It's not because of laziness, OK? It's personal favor So besides reading novels, how can we get interesting and convenient English reading sources? We all have a smartphone, in this time with advanced Internet, apparently they will be websites and apps As for me, I am used to using English surface on Internet so almost all of my common visit websites are display in English So English reading is simultaneously how I get information and how I get entertainment Today I'm gonna introduce 3 websites that I visit them for fun to help you making a habit of English reading through interesting contexts The first on is "9gag". It's a joke website, all the contexts are made by their users Usually it will be a pic, or a gif, with a short line of words There's their popularity ranking on the homepage, and it's updating every few minutes So even if you visit the website very often, it's hard to bump into things you have already read Next I'm going to show you how this website looks like and what its context is When you visit 9gag, you can see the most popular post As we can see, its post will have a pic of a gif, and a simple English sentence like here, "He just want to take a nap." Yeah, cute and funny posts like this Sometimes, it will also have English inside the picture So you can see the title here: "This is pure gold." But the title inside the image is: "This was the happiest cat they could find..." It's a vegetarian cat, so it looks really upset So like this, simple, funny and relaxing posts By just looking through all these, you can see some English accompany with images OK then let's look at some special stuff on 9gag. These called "meme" They are presented by animals, classical images to symbolize a typical meaning Such as this, "awkward seal", it always comes with very embarrassing things And this is "success baby" Usually, a very success thing will be accompanied with this meme Then this is "curious philosoraptor" If something is thinking about a philosophical question, it will use this meme This meme is called "confession bear" Basically it will be used on maybe propose, something stupid or bad you have done in the past This meme is "first world problems" It may be a really small question, and it will appear with this meme Of course there are much more meme there, but we can only introduce those today When you read 9gag, and find something appear repeatly Then you can get to know which meme are going to what kind of feeling Next we are talking about BuzzFeed, an American new media company which also owns a very successful Youtube channel Basically, this site is showing funny thing happened in the US real like and the Internet in funny and brief articles BuzzFeed, this website, we can see tons of posts when we visit it it's a little bit cluttered, but I'll suggest you guys to start with the categories up here There're many categories: LOL, win, OMG cute, fall, or WTF, it might be something weird And as for me, I always start with this the red arrow, what it is, it's call "trending" namely the hot topics now. I will start with here And then, we can find 2 tabs The first one is "trending now", which means it's hot now and "top posts this week, which means the hottest post this week Usually, you can find interesting articles at these 2 places Now let's pick up one of them. Let's look at this: "17 Pictures of Bill Clinton Realizing that Balloons Exist" Okay access to the context, at first of course we can see the title and this passage is about Clinton will be unusually excited when he see balloons in the beginning, it will give you some discribtion Here are some bullet points, from 1 to 8 and their photos So, this one " They are real! The balloons are real!" "He can touch the balloons!" "Touching another" "Wow" Hahaha, a zoom-in photo. Ok, so He really likes balloons! How could this become the hottest post this week And another interesting thing is BuzzFeed is talking about the hottest things in American real life and the Internet world so you can know what is trending now by simply checking their posts The last on is Reddit, a site that I visit almost everyday It is known as "the front page of the Internet", which is the homepage of the Internet or the American ptt It has various sections can allow people to discuss and post Then let's take a look at this site, Reddit. Its layout looks a little bit like ptt Very simple and nude. There are many different hot keys and buttons looks a little complicated But basically, the first page you see would be the hottest post There are many ways to react with posts You can upvote or downvote them. Just like what we do on ptt You can also click on one of them to leave a comment And if you click on a comment, you can see how people talk about the post Another point is called "subreddit" which means that many posts are separated by different topics So, today I'm going to recommend 3 subreddits. The first one is "askreddit" When you throw out a question, and people will discuss it below Basically, it's a place allow you to discuss questions So, usually there are plenty of comments below You can see there are almost 2000 comments here So if you are interested in one question you can click on it and see people debating badly The second section I am gonna recommend is "Today I Learned" On this section, people share what they learned All the posts here are started with TIL, which means "Today I Learned" followed by a sentence, which is what he or she learned So, on the section, you can find some interesting trivia and below them, of course, people's comments The last section I want to recommend is "Today I Fucked Up", TIFU Basically, I really suggest that you can visit this section when you are down The logic here is, someone did something really stupid He or she will start the post with "TIFU", then what stupid thing he or she done For example, let's take a look at this one, TIFU by asking a girl out So, click on it, and we can see a short story The story about how he fucked it up So, I strongly believe that, after you read the post, after you read the section you'll feel like your life is still hopeful Alright! These are the 3 useful Websites I recommend Even though you can't see international news or classical literature there but they are supposed to be attractive and interesting Visit them every day without any pressure, after a long period insist this habit, maybe you can start your habit of English reading If you like this video, give me a thumbs up!
