Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hey guys, Des with T-Mobile! We're in Wellington, New Zealand, the home of Weta Digital Studios. We're going to bring you some Behind-the-Scenes of Alita: Battle Angel, James Cameron and John Landau's new epic movie directed by Robert Rodriguez. Thanks T-Mobile Tuesdays for hooking you guys up with $4 tickets. Let's check it out! First up, performance capture with the digital team and director Robert Rodriguez. Good to meet you! Eric. Nice to meet you! This is the performance capture stage. All right. That is Ike, he's a good guy. He's a good guy? Yeah. This is Shane, he's the bad guy. He looks like a bad guy! Good to meet you. It does fire rockets! I can't seem to hit it. All right, cool! While you're doing your scenes, so you don't feel like you're running an empty stage. Okay, cool! I love it. So this performance capture stages got like 86 cameras around you and they shoot infrared light that bounces off those markers and back up into those cameras and that way we can triangulate and capture the motion. Today, we're going to do a bit off stunt, choreography thing where you're going to take down Shane. So, I'll show you how's it's going to work. If you come over here, so we're looking into the monitor way over there and we see Nyssiana standing in front of Girishka, looking up at him, right? So these guys are separated but in the digital space, we align them. Put them together a little bit. Yup. And you see how Ike's looking up at that mark on top of that stick? And Shane is looking down at that green X on the ground? Oh okay, I get it. That's to get their eye line right because Shane is actually playing a character that is a lot taller and Ike's a lot smaller. Now, the reason that we've separated these guys in physical space is so that I can nail that pad as hard as he wants and it's going to knock Shayne's knee up from underneath. So these guys, like on set, you stunt perform those all, interact with one another. Today, we're a little worried about you hurting Shayne, so we've done this pad thing, uhm but we're going to zap back into that space and look at your character. Okay. You want to give it a go? Okay, let's do it. Okay, so the interesting thing about performance capture is you could play like really tiny character that's light on its feet or big heavy mac robot. You're playing Romo today. But you've got closer to the light here, see you won't catch fire, first of all. Ah, that's cool! Real time. You have a missing chest, you got those tats, you got those body pieces stitched together, so you're more intimidating than size. So you want to play that and your body attitude, forget that you're here and you're him now. So cockier, chest out, you know, swag around a little more and that's the attitude of this guy, more like a street thug who uses his looks and his intimidation rather than his size. So that's just something to keep in mind. Okay, yeah. So that posture that attitude that Robert is talking about is you put that into the character and it transforms the character. So today, we're going to start at the top of the ramp we saw Ike, move down through the space and interact with the space. You can be loud and call him out, as you're looking for him and as you get up to this mark, Ike's going to show you the stunt. And Action! [Music] Who's this? Coming into my lab. Whoever it is, I can smell your fear. Desmond, Desmond, I've got a bone to pick with you. Should not be mobile, they should stand tall. Strong. And not be moved. You're just like all the other carriers! You'll go down just like them as well. Bring it! Little scratches, bring me down! No, no. That's my guitar! No no mobile phone. [Music] [Laughter] Wow. Cut! Beautiful. Nice. Very fun. That was awesome! You really don't like those other carriers, huh? So that's a little Behind-the-Scenes for Alita: Battle Angel. Thanks so much, T-Mobile Tuesdays for hooking you guys up with $4 tickets. Check the app on February, 12th to grab a ticket for opening weekend. I'm Des for T-Mobile, thanks for watching!
