- (FBE) All right, so let's go back to the first video we showed you
and their comeback. So, in just a week since its release,
the video has amassed over 50 million views
and was one of the most talked about moments on social media.
- When I saw that the Jonas Brothers came out with a new song,
huge surprise. I was honestly shocked.
- (FBE) Why do you think that this is such a big deal
to so many people? - Because everyone waited so long!
Everyone's loving it because it's the same sound.
You hear the music and you're like, "Yes,
that's the Jonas Brothers." - I think there's just one big reason
why people are freaking out, and it's just nostalgia.
- This is part of so many people's childhoods,
like the movies, the shows that they had.
They blew the [bleep] up. - Because they're brothers too
that it was so sad for them to break off and do their own thing.
This is kind for all of the fans that are grown up and got married
and then stuff, that's it like-- this is them coming back
and saying, like, "Hey, we're okay. We're still brothers.
We still love each other. We still wanna do this thing."
- (FBE) So, the brothers have said that they combined Nick and Joe's
solo sounds to create this new sound for the group.
- 100%. You can tell that they've combined their sounds,
but it was a smart decision.
- (FBE) What do you think about this new era
of Jonas Brothers' sound compared to their old classics?
- I definitely see some maturity. I mean, not as much
as I would've liked. They're not, like, a George Clooney.
- As they mature, their music has to, and I think that's normal.
And it would've been weird if they were still singing songs
like "Year 3000." - It does sound a lot more
like DNCE and Nick Jonas's solo stuff, which I have always gravitated
more towards. Never hardcore, but more than the original JoBros.
- (FBE) All right. So, let's dig a little bit into the past.
How old were you when the Jonas Brothers
were at the height of their popularity,
and how did you feel about them back then?
- I think I was 12. And I literally
couldn't care less about them. I was uncool for not liking them.
- 11 or 12. Their music wasn't for me,
but I never disliked them. - 2007. I was in seventh grade.
I was a middle schooler. Too cool for the Jonas Brothers,
like, I can't be fans of them. - We were in the seventh grade,
'cause we waited 11 hours in line to see them. (laughs)
And we skipped school to go see them. - Yeah, we did.
- 14, 15. And then as they kind of caught that wind from there--
And I definitely had total jelly, like jelly feelings,
because all the girls I liked were into them.
- Nine or ten then when the Jonas Brothers
were at their peak right around 2008.
My older cousins, who I always really looked up to
loved the Jonas Brothers. So, it was perfect,
because it was the three of us together.
And the two older ones were like, "Yeah, I'm gonna marry Joe."
"I'm gonna marry Nick." So, I got stuck with Kevin.
And no offense to Kevin, but I wanted Nick!
- Nine years old, and those guys were my idols.
They were everything I wanted to be.
This is really embarrassing, but I wrote on the wall
with a sharpie-- This is fourth grade me.
I wrote their lyrics on a wall, because it was just like--
I don't know. I had to do that.
- (FBE) So, one of the big aspects that many tabloids liked
to discuss back then were the Jonas Brothers
and their purity rings, being on Disney and being a symbol
to wait for the right person. - My favorite tweet was,
"The Jonas Brothers are back, and they've had sex."
- I remember seeing everything about the purity rings
and being like, "I know these boys are banging Selena Gomez
behind the scenes." Like, you cannot tell me that they weren't!
- I had one because of them. - One of the things I did like
about them is that they were totally open with their religion
and totally open with wearing purity rings.
And that was the coolest thing, especially coming from
a Christian family and wanting to wait and stuff like that.
But now that they're older and stuff, they've experienced life
and they lived their own lives and they chose what they wanted
to do, and they got married and they did their own thing.
- (FBE) So now, all three brothers are either married or engaged,
and their new song has a sexier vibe than what fans may have been used to
from their previous music. - Well, yeah.
They've experienced more life. They've made it past first base.
- (FBE) So, what do you think it's like for fans
to see them grow up and to see them go from kids
on Disney to a more mature style and music?
- I mean, it's cool, 'cause we forget that celebrities
are people too, and they age,
and they go through their own things. Now that they're older
and they see them grow with them, it must be really cool.
- I don't think it's all that weird. It feels almost perfect
just because a lot of their fans are older now,
so they're kind of ready for these mature themes.
- It's like watching your babies. (chuckles) It's like,
I knew that dude when he was singing ♪ Hold on ♪
And now, he's over here singing about adult themes.
It's just-- it's insane. - It's normal for them to grow up.
But it's difficult, because, you know,
you know them so well as these young kids.
But at the same time, they had to.
- (FBE) So finally, as a young adult now,
you are one of the first generations of adults who grew up
with social media, allowing fans to follow artists
or groups as they got older and evolved or even split up
like the Jonas Brothers. So, how is this different
than generations of the past who grew up with their favorite artist
but without social media around? - I think it gives a bit more mystery
to the artist. It might draw you into them
a little bit more, because there is no social media.
- Social media has twisted fandoms into the most amazing thing
and the most dark, twisted, horrible thing,
because you have these whole communities online
that are just rabid, which means that it makes the bad
really bad and the good really good.
It just spreads so much quicker now. It's so much more in your face
all the time than it was back then. - Yeah, that's true.
We had to wait till the next Tiger Beat
freaking magazine came out with all the posters
and had to buy every single one of them
and just use all the posters. - Yeah!
- It's just more informative. Having social media,
you have a, "Oh, they released Wire,""
"They tweeted this," or "They said this."
And it's like-- it's a good way to compile
a whole bunch of different information. - The relationship between the fans
and the celebrity is so much easier
and authentic now because the celebrity is the one
that's creating the content. Before everything seemed
to be, like, maybe there's a middleman or it was produced and there wasn't
that authenticity that social media allows.
- With social media, we got to see a more personal side
of them rather than when they were on TRL
or when their music videos played on MTV.
I'm gonna make up for the time in 2008 when I didn't go
to any of their concerts, and I'm gonna be the first one
at that door at my computer buying whatever concert tickets I need.
I don't know. Maybe I'll mess around
and become a groupie. I'm totally cool with it.
