She's made such a large come-up that it's like you can't say any shit about her. - I love it! I'm sorry, this is like a completely new me. You guys have usually seen me so calm, collected, and adorable... NOT NO MORE, 'cause Cardi B is right here! - (FBE) So that was Cardi B with her single "Bodak Yellow," Which was number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her only the second female rapper ever to achieve that spot after Lauryn Hill did it in 1998. - Jeez. That's crazy. I would've thought Nicki Minaj or somebody would've gotten it since Lauryn Hill. - Lauryn Hill's a prodigy, so that's a high class to be in. - Jeez. So from 1998 to now in 2017, Cardi B's bringing it up again. Like, female rappers, let's do this. - (FBE) What do you think it is about the song that has made her be able to be number one on the charts? - It's really catchy. - It's not just the lyrics itself, but it's the feeling you get. You gotta bounce to it, you know? You gotta... ayy, okay. - It's like a song that'll get you in your feels. It'll get you hyped, you know? - It's a super hype song. I just had-- I went to a concert at my school, there was no one even performing. They just started playing it, and everyone just went crazy. - Every girl feels that way at some point of their life. There's so many videos of girls yelling at this to their man or to any male person in the room, and point and poke at them, because they feel that way! Like, a girl has been through this before. Of course, she's gonna represent it in a rap song. - (FBE) So Cardi B has had a very interesting rise to fame. She escaped domestic abuse and became an exotic dancer. - Really? - I knew about the exotic dancer, but I did not know about the domestic abuse. That's awful. - (FBE) She was then able to grow massive social media presence and even had a role in the TV show, Love & Hip Hop: New York. - That's great, to be honest. - I didn't even know about her until, I don't know, this past month? And then all of a sudden, she's number one and, uh... Okay! That's cool. Good for you! - She's making it for herself. She started off on the internet, and now she's up her with all of the big rappers. I'm so happy that her career's finally going off. - She was big on Instagram as it was because she was making funny videos and stuff like that, promoting Fashion Nova, you know, Bougie on a Budget. - Love & Hip Hop! Oh my god! Me and my mom watch that show religiously! I knew Cardi B before she was on Love & Hip Hop, because she was a regular shmegular girl from the Bronx. From a regular shmegular girl from the Bronx to the number one on Billboard. - (FBE) So what do you think about Cardi B and her rise to fame? - Um, I'm... it's... Good for her, 'cause I think it's pretty rare to just come out of nowhere and just immediately be on top. - It makes you wanna like their songs more. It makes you wanna-- since you know what they struggled through, and you think they have at least decent music, it makes the music sound better. - People make fun of Instafamous, but it's becoming the same level as regular famous. She found a way that worked for her, and she took it, and now she is number one. - Having to deal with pressure all your life and then still blow up from it, it's great. It's inspirational, so much, to me and so many other people. - I love when people from the internet manage to get into the mainstream, and I just think that's so cool to let people know, hey, you can come from where I came from, and just work your way up through any social media platform. It doesn't have to be, you know, you need to get signed to a major record label immediately. You can just make it on your own. - She got herself out of a situation for herself, for her well-being, while other people sometimes, it's just-- they shame her for it. They don't understand going through that, but she did her thing on that show, and then left when she got what she needed, and then rose up to fame, because she deserves it. - (FBE) So as I said earlier, Cardi's success made history as she is just the second female rapper to have the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Why do you think it has taken so long for another artist to hit that spot? - I just... I don't think that there are a lot of female rappers, and I think when there are, they're not taken seriously. So I think that's really great that she's showing people, hey, you can be a female rapper, and you can make it, you know, to the Top 100 Billboard. - There's so many male rappers that are just more popular, and then there's not that many that are popular too, like, female rappers that are popular. So they couldn't find her as easily, but with her Instagram followers, it helped out a lot, definitely. - It's a really male-dominated industry, and it's really tough just because rap music, a lot of it, not all of it, but a lot of it is about women and getting girls and getting money and all that, so that's male-centric. - Hip hop is so male-dominated, though, and especially you have the same sort of stigma where it's, like, let's talk about hoes and the club, and my [bleep] 24/7, like whatever. (chuckles) But it's, like, female rappers, they have some of the greatest sense of empowering lyrics and just good songs that they need more recognition. - (FBE) So with Cardi B's latest success, do you think that we'll have to wait another 20 years before we see a female rapper take the number one spot again? Or do you think that she's paved the way to allow for another female rapper to take the spot again soon? - This is gonna become more of a thing. I know that for sure. - I'm hoping that she sets it up for something, you know, for more female rappers, because we need more. - Maybe she actually paved the way for a lot of other female artists to now climb the rings. If she was able to do it, now other people will be like, "Hey, if she can do it, I can do it, too!" - It inspires others to be like, "Oh, if Cardi could do it," I could do it," you know? 'Cause she went from the bottom, and now she's number one, the Top 100. That just shows anything is possible. - A lot of other female rappers are gonna look up to this, and be like, "Okay, it is possible. I can get a number one Billboard top song." So I feel, like, for sure, Cardi B has had some influence, and for sure, there will be more female rappers. - Thanks for watching, guys, and big thanks to Alexandra Pregal for watching last week. - Subscribe and hit the bell.
