  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 33. The noun phrase today is

  • wallflower. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If you say someone is a

  • wallflower, especially a young girl. Yeah we don't really use it with guys. It's

  • mostly a young girl. You mean she is very shy and does not get involved in dancing

  • or being active at parties or social events. Yeah. So that's kind of the idea.

  • She's just standing there almost like she's just a flower. Not doing anything.

  • Looking lonely and I don't know. Maybe, maybe there weren't many guys actually

  • asking her to dance or she wasn't going out just joining and dancing. You know,

  • nowadays sometimes two girls would even get out there and dance just to have fun.

  • But if you're a wallflower, you're just kind of standing there looking at other

  • people just kind of waiting. That's what we mean by a wallflower. Somebody is a

  • wallflower. All right. So let's take a look at the first example here. Go ask

  • Jessica to dance. She looks like a wallflower standing around watching

  • other people dance. Yeah. So this may be somebody feeling sorry for her and maybe

  • asking one of the other guys. Yeah just go ask her to dance.

  • Have a few dances, dances with her you know, so she doesn't feel so lonely

  • or out of place or something like that. All right. Let's continue. Let's look at

  • the second example here. When I was younger I was a bit of a wallflower. I

  • would just sit there waiting for someone to ask me to dance and I was too

  • embarrassed to ask a boy to dance. Okay. Yes. That's kind of a perfect example.

  • Yeah. So this is what we mean if we say somebody is a wallflower. Again,

  • especially a young girl that's just standing there not very active in the

  • party. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time.

  • Bye-bye.
