Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 122. The proverb today is nothing
ventured nothing gained. Now remember to venture, anytime we venture, it always
means that you're doing something that might be exciting but that obviously
there is some risk involved. All right. So let's continue here.
The proverb basically means if you don't take risks in your life , you won't be
able to attain or to get or to accomplish anything of importance or
deep meaning. So nothing ventured , nothing gained. And we always do it sometimes to
kind of encourage somebody to you know, just kind of do it. Go for it. So let's
continue here. This is another proverb that is first cited, cited means the
first time they really found it from John Haywoods 1546 book. So remember
this is a really, really old proverb. It goes way back you know more than 500 years
ago or more. And remember his book was just a book of his collection of proverbs
that he had at that time. So and this was the name of it you know a dialogue
containing the number in effect of all proverbs. I don't know the pronunciation
might be it might have been slightly different back then
because you, you can probably see that the spelling was different.
They definitely spelled containing a different way today we spell it CONTAINING
and number of course is spelled with a U in effect of all the
Proverbs and we wouldn't have an ES on proverbs today. But again that's one of
these .... that's where this proverb came from. From that book a long long time ago.
Or it's the first one that's cited. Like I said he probably had ...he, he wrote them
down he collected them and put them all in this book. But anyway. Let's get into
some of the examples. So you can understand it better. So example number
one. Even though I probably don't have a snowball's chance in hell. Yeah, remember
this is another idiom. I don't think I covered this one yet but if we say that
somebody has a doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell, it
basically means you probably have no chance at all. Remember the idea is if
you really had a snowball and it was in hell you know, we all imagined hell is
supposed to be a place where there's a lot of fire and it would be very hot so
a snowball would not last very long in hell. It would melt. So if we say that
somebody says that they don't have a snowball's chance in hell, basically it
means they have no chance at all. So getting back to the first example. Even
though, I probably don't have a snowball's chance in hell , I'm going to
try out for that part in this movie. What do I have to lose ? You know, so I don't
get the part. At least I'm going to try out. Nothing ventured nothing gained. This is
often the way we might say it. Thinking like well, I'm just going to try for it
anyway. Maybe I'll get lucky. Maybe I'll get it. But if not, well at least I tried.
it's kind of like that idea. When anytime somebody says nothing ventured nothing
gained. So if you don't even try, you won't get it. That's basically the idea.
So number two here. If you really like her, just ask her out. You know,
ask her out on a date. Of course, you know, you could hear somebody say this. Oh, the
worst that could happen is that she says "no. " All right. So if you're brave enough
or you know, if you , if you , if you can just take that. You know , then go for it.
Sometimes you just have to go for it. Go for it , you know, remember , just do
it. Just go for it. Nothing ventured nothing gained. You
never know, you might get lucky. Maybe she'll say "yes. " Who knows ? Okay. But anyway
this is what we mean. So I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your
time. Bye-bye.
