  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 238. The idiom today simply in order

  • Okay. And we actually have three uses and three meanings here. So let's look at the

  • first one. When we say in order, sometimes we mean something is organized or

  • properly arranged. So put in the proper order. Or number two, in a proper sequence,

  • You know, one following each other . Like we use the example like you know,

  • alphabetical order or in order according to number or series or something like

  • that. So we say you know in a proper sequence, in the correct sequence. Maybe

  • even according to dates it could be in order.

  • Okay. And the third one is a suitable or correct. So some ... we often use this in the

  • phrase like something is in order. It means something is suitable for the situation,

  • or the event, or whatever is happening at that time. Okay. So let's

  • look at some examples here. Example number one. Everything in this room is in

  • chaos. I need to get it in order. So this is what we mean. You need to get it

  • you know, organized. You need to get it arranged the right way. So you need to

  • get it in order. Or maybe something maybe your desk is messy. You want to get your

  • your desk in order. All right. Good. Let's look at number two here. Can you

  • put these files in order according to the alphabet. You know so we say

  • alphabetical order. In order according to the alphabet. We got a lot of files, you

  • know, by ABCD. So somebody wants you to file them in that way. Okay. Good. Let's

  • continue. Let's look at number three here. You've got a promotion ? Really that

  • happened ? I believe a celebration is in order. You know. Let's go out let's you

  • know, buy you a drink or you know something like that. Let's do something

  • to show we're celebrating this. All right. Number four. After your bad

  • behavior, I would say an apology is in order. So we use in order in this way.

  • It's both. It could be used for both positive or negative things. Just like

  • you could say a celebration is in order. It's very positive or an apology could

  • be in order. Because maybe you did something wrong , and somebody could say you

  • know, you really you have to apologize. You're just definitely wrong. It's a the

  • right thing to do. It's a suitable thing to do here. All right. And let's look at

  • the last one. I heard you are getting married. I would say some congratulations

  • is in order. Yeah. Maybe even maybe they're just going to

  • shake your hands and say congratulations. Or again maybe do something. Give you

  • a gift or buy you something. Or maybe also ask you out. You know, go eat

  • something to try to celebrate. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's

  • clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye,
