  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 226. The idiom. today is to tempt fate

  • or sometimes you might even hear tempt providence. Even though, I think Tempt fate

  • is more common. All right. Let's take a look at a few definitions here. So if someone

  • tempts fate or providence... so you use them both this way, he or she talks too

  • confidently about something which could go wrong or could possibly go wrong. Or

  • number two. If someone tempts fate , he or she takes too many unnecessary risks or

  • does something that may bring bad luck. So we often say ... don't tempt

  • fate. Don't tempt providence. All right. So

  • here's number one. The first example is an a/b part. A says I am I'm very healthy. I

  • never get sick. And B says be careful you shouldn't say things like that. You don't

  • want to tempt fate. You know, fate I mean if you believe in fate

  • or you believe in destiny , you believe in that there might be some powerful force

  • out there that kind of looks over us and if maybe you say something like I never

  • get sick. And maybe that whatever that force is may look down and say never get sick.

  • Okay. Well now you just got sick. You know, you're you're tempting fate. So it kind

  • of has ... it kind of feels that way. That's what they mean by to tempt fate. Let's

  • look at number two. I'm the best there is. No competition... there is no competition

  • who can beat me. Yeah. So this is one where like we talked

  • about here where you could be overconfident. somebody. Yeah. tempt providence. Because

  • somebody's too confident about something. Sometimes you're too confident. You speak

  • this way. Again maybe you're tempting fate. Maybe those forces out there. Oh you

  • think you can never lose. Okay. We'll do something to make you lose today.

  • So B will say here. It's good to be confident but you shouldn't say that. You

  • don't want to tempt providence. Providence also is like tempting fate -

  • it's the same idea or it's that the care of God or the fates that controls you

  • that's what Providence is supposed to be. So let's look at number three

  • stop walking across that narrow wall I know your balance is good but you don't

  • want to tempt fate. All right again. This might go under the

  • second part here where maybe somebody is taking unnecessary risks or unnecessary

  • chances like I'll be careful I know you're good but you know, you never know

  • something could happen Don't tempt fate. Okay. Anyway I hope you

  • got it I hope . I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye -bye
