Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Word Origins 49. The word origin today is dreamboat. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here if someone first to another person as a dreamboat it means he or she is extremely attractive and good-looking. All right. This term does tend to be used more with young men than with women. Yeah. I almost always hear it used with men. I can't I really almost can hardly think of any examples of it being used with women. Anyway. Let's continue here. The origin is believed to come from a 1936 hit song named when my dreamboat comes home. Okay. It was originally written and performed by Guy Lombardo. So a guy originally wrote it so and there... and when we see here you know , some of the famous artists that did sing it. So you did have some men singing. So they must have been singing it about a woman at the time. So at least in the song, it did refer to a woman, but in regular everyday speech I almost hear always hear it referred to as a man. So it was originally written and perormed by Guy Lombardo. However the song has been remade many times and sung by numerous famous artists such as Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee, Fats Domino, Ray Charles , Bing Crosby, and even Bugs Bunny sang it in a cartoon. Now these were all a while ago, I mean I don't know anybody recently that did it, but that doesn't mean that the term doesn't exist anymore. The term is still around , you still might hear somebody referred to as a handsome guy, as a dreamboat. Okay. Let's continue here. The song makes reference to the return of one's love in a romantic way. You know and they're almost referring to them as... well they are referring to them as the dreamboat. The dreamboat is their love that's coming back. But anyway here's a couple of examples of how we we do actually use it. So example number one. You know, maybe another girl or some somebody might be saying to this girl "wow, you are so lucky. Your new boyfriend is a dreamboat. " Or a real dreamboat. Or number two here. You might have many handsome male actors in the past have been referred to as dreamboats. All right. So these are two examples. These are two ways that you might hear it be used. Anyway I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
