Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is two-worded adverb one. The two worded adverb today is lickety-split. Okay. Lickety -split basically means very quickly or a a great speed. So it happens really, really fast. All right. Let's take a look at the note here. The origin is unclear. Some people think it comes from the fact that ice cream or something else that. You are eating which is cold and melting will drip very quickly. And you need to make quick licks. (hmmm, hmmm) Some other people think, it may have something to do with the use of the lick of a whip. All right. The lick of a whip to make an animal move quicker. So you have two ideas. One is from ice cream. The other one is about whipping an animal to make it move quicker. The split idea may come from a split second or the fraction of a second. . Which of course would be very quickly. So we say a split-second is less than one second. You know, all right . Let's continue. Let's look at the first example here. I need those reports to be done lickety-split. Very informally, we might say this. Or number two. When it was his turn to buy a round of beers. He disappeared lickety-split. Very quickly . Just suddenly it would be like what happened ? Where did he go ? What happened ? Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it is clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
