Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 78. The noun phrase today is a rule of thumb. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. A rule of thumb is a guide or principle often based on experience. Or you know, those people that have experience and they say you know, you should do this or you should follow this rule. So let's continue here. The origin and phrase is unclear. Yeah. I've read that there's a few different ideas about where it might have come from, but this is a ... we'll just mention one here. Some think it may refer to the idea that an inch came from the measurement from the joint to the tip of the thumb. Yeah. If you're looking at your finger like from here to here. It looks like about an inch. It does look similar to it. So I don't know if that's where it came from or not , but that's what some people think. All right. Let's look at the couple of examples here. Number one. If you go overseas , as a rule of thumb don't carry cash.. That's what they usually tell you or don't carry all cash. Most still advise traveler's checks. You know, some people I don't know, maybe they use a credit card but that could be dangerous too. In case that gets stolen, than you can lose more money. All right. Let's look at number two here. If you are going to climb very high mountains, like Mount Everest or some comparable sort of a high mountain. As a rule of thumb you should carry an oxygen bottle with you just in case you experience either some altitude sickness or have trouble breathing. When you're up at the top of the mountain there. Yeah. You , you don't want to end up and turn it into some sort of an emergency situation where where it could be fatal, a fatal trip. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
