Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Adverb Phrase 20. The adverb phrase today is right off the bat. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If someone does something or something happens right off the bat, it means that it happens immediately or at the beginning of a process and especially we want to emphasize that. Okay. Let's continue. The phrase "right off the bat" alludes to baseball in the way that a ball will immediately fly off a baseball bat when struck by a batter. So when the batter swings the bat and hits the ball the ball will immediately spring and shoot in another direction. However, however the batter hit it or you know, depending upon how the ball was thrown it will go to the right. It will go to the left, but either way it will fly off that bat immediately. So this is what we mean. All right. Good and here's just three examples to cover this idea. Number one. The interviewer took me by surprise when he asked me that question right off the bat. You know, right away , immediately. Probably the person who was getting the question... the interviewee was not expecting that question. All right.Number two. The first time I ever tried to stand on a surfboard, I slipped and fell right off the bat. You know, right away boom. As soon as you got on boom. Right down. So right at the beginning of the process. Right away. Immediately. All right. Good and number three here. This is probably like a mother talking to probably one of her children. She says I met your father on a blind date and we were attracted to each other right off the bat. All right. So that's the way . that's just the way you might hear it. That's the way we often see it in a movie. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it was clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
