Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 112. The noun phrase today is
beer belly. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. A beer belly could also
sometimes be called a beer gut. So you can either say beer belly or beer gut.
Okay. Let's continue. If a man has a beer belly.
Yeah. We usually only say beer belly with men. We don't say beer belly with women.
So if a man has a beer belly, he has a protruding ... protruding you know,
it's really sticking out. Protruding belly from too much beer drinking. Some
say it looks similar to the belly of a pregnant woman. So of course men cannot
get pregnant but when they have a beer belly they can almost look a little bit
like they are pregnant. It's protruding in it in a similar sort of a way. Okay.
Let's continue. One can also use the adjective phrase beer-bellied as well
like you know, it comes directly from the noun phrase beer belly. All right and let's
look at three examples we have here. Example number one. You need to start
exercising. You really need to get rid of that beer belly. So this is somebody who
already has a beer belly. Maybe the wife or somebody else in the family is
telling him, you got to get rid of that.It looks bad. Okay. Number two. You should cut
down on your beer intake. You know, how much you're taking in. You are starting
to get a beer belly. All right. These are typical ways you hear it used. And number
three here. This is the adjective. That beer-bellied construction worker was
making wolf whistles at me. Yeah. We've talked about this before. Remember I
covered a noun phrase a long time ago about wolf whistles. That's you know , when
some guys will whistle out a pretty girl that goes by like a (wolf whistle sounds ) you know, like that.
So that is a wolf whistle. So the construction ... the construction worker, the
beer-bellied construction worker was making a wolf whistle at her. Anyway,
I hope you got it. I hope it was clear. I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you for your time.
Bye-bye.
