Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 127. The noun phrase today is monkey business. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If we say that there is some monkey business or we suspect monkey business, it refers to either foolish, mischievous, or dishonest activities. Okay. Let's continue. The origin of monkey business is originally from Bengali. It was a Bengali phrase. It is believed the British picked it up when they occupied India. A number of temples were often populated by monkeys. Of, of course who do not have the best behavior. They would often steal things from humans, poop and urinate everywhere. Yeah. I've actually gone to a few temples where there are monkeys around and I've heard of cases too. I think I heard of case I remember in Malaysia. I remember another girl I met who was travelling one time and she actually got bit by a monkey. I actually seen teeth marks on her arm. She said the monkey was trying to steal stuff from her she tried to pull back and the monkey actually bit her on her arm. So they have been known to do this. So they poo poo and pee pee. They climb over sacred objects. They steal things. So this is the idea. That is why we say monkey business. Okay. Yeah. They would often steal things from humans, poop and urinate everywhere climb over sacred statues and objects. Any mischievous behavior became to be called monkey business or started to be called monkey business. Okay. Good. So anyway, we have other three examples to show just how we will use this phrase. Something doesn't seem right. I think there must be some monkey business going on here. You often hear people say there must be monkey business going on. Something's wrong something. In this case, they probably mean something dishonest or something that's not quite right. Well, let's look at number two. Every time I step out of the classroom, when I return I am sure to find some monkey business was going on. Basically was happening when I returned. Yeah. If you've ever seen the old movie "Kindergarten Cop. " I know it's really, really old now with Arnold Schwarzenegger. When he was taking care of the kindergarten class and he couldn't control them. They were just going like wild animals all over the place. You know, so yeah sometimes if there's no teacher there long enough, you know the younger the class is the more likely there might be some monkey business going on, while the teacher steps out of the room. Okay. Good and let's look at number three here. The numbers don't add up. A lot of money is missing. I think there must be some monkey business going on. All right. Again this is a case where probably, probably something dishonest ... money is missing. Perhaps somebody stole it or something doesn't seem quite right. Okay. Anyway I hope you got it. I hope it was clear. I hope it was informative. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
