What my co-awardees and I identified was a molecular pathway that allows cells to sense
oxygen and depending how much oxygen they are getting, to respond appropriately by turning
on specific genes, that for example:
might stimulate red blood cell production or might stimulate blood vessel formation.
When I was younger, my late wife and I would you know sort of have fun together and talk about what would be like,
what would happen, what would it be like if you ever won this prize?
To be honest, there were a couple of years after I lost her, that I thought, "Please, not
a prize cause it would be just too bittersweet."
But I'm at a point now that I'd like to think she is smiling down, and nodding and saying
“I told you! I told you this was going to happen."
