Right now, I'm in Shanshang District of Tainan City. 嗨 我是大衛 我現在在臺南市山上 區 Now, Shanshang literally means mountaintop, 山上字面上來看是在山頂上 even though it's more hilly than mountainous, 雖然說這裡感覺比較偏丘陵地而不是在山上啦 but that's beside the point. Shanshang has a lot of historical heritages, 山上有很多歷史遺跡 and of course, food! So, let's go and explore! Right now, 我們現在 we are in the Tainan Shan-Shang Garden and Old Waterworks Museum. Right now, we are inside the filtration room, 現在我們在過濾室裡面 and it looks really, really amazing. This place is in fact, the earliest source for tap water in Tainan. Even though this place has been superseded by modern water supply systems, It's now a national monument, 它現在是國定的歷史建築 so, let's go and check it out! The history of tap water in Tainan began in 1897, 臺南自來水的歷史可追朔至1897年 when public sanitation advisor and engineer W.K. Burton and Hamano Yashiro 當年公共衛生顧問暨工程師巴爾頓與濱野彌四郎 began their hydrological survey in this area 在臺灣總督府的指派下 under the authority of the Taiwan Governor General's Office. The construction of this waterworks facility began in 1912, 自來水廠的興建始於1912年 and took about 10 years to complete. Upon completion, it was able to serve about 100000 people in Tainan. 完工後 它可滿足約10萬人的需求 After years of restoration, 經過多年的修復 the Tainan Shan-Shang Garden and Old Waterworks Museum 臺南山上花園水道博物館 officially opened its doors in October 2019. Inside this incredibly large campus are lots of cool-looking installation art, 在這片很大的園區內有很多酷酷的裝置藝術 heritage buildings and historical artifacts. Man! You know, it's almost like a pilgrimage just to see the water purification pool. In fact, I think this super long staircase has more than 200 steps. It's quite the workout, but I think it's worth it. Let's go and check it out! This place looks like its straight out of a movie, 這裡就像是電影裡的場景 like Indian Jones or something like that. But in fact, it's a water purification pool. Earlier on, we were at the old waterworks museum. Water from that place would get pumped up to this pool, 水會由那邊被打上來 and then, it would get distributed throughout Tainan City. While this place no longer serves its original purpose, 雖然這裡已喪失了原有的功能 it has become a prime habitat for the Taiwan leaf-nosed bats. The bats would actually fly in and out of the openings up top. But to get in, you would actually need to apply first. The inside of the purification pool sure is dark! It's so mysterious, in fact, it almost feels like an Aztec temple. Can you hear that? I think I can hear bats in the distance. The inside of this purification pool is kept dark, 淨水池內部刻意保持黑漆漆的 so as not to disturb the bats. So make sure not to use flash photography inside. There are these 59 cast iron tubes, 這裡有59座鑄鐵管 and they are not smokestacks. They are actually used to ventilate this underground purification pool, 它們是用來讓這座地底淨水池保持通風 so, the water doesn't go bad. So, it's the perfect place for a weekend stroll 若你喜歡歷史與建築 if you are into history and architecture. It really is a privilege to be able to visit 能來到山上花園水道博物館 the Tainan Shan-Shang Garden and Old Waterworks Museum. You know, it's rare to find a museum dedicated to the water supply system, 要找到專門呈現供水系統的博物館並不容易 especially on such a large scale. So, if you are into history, and of course, 若你對歷史 public infrastructures, this is the place to check out. Directly across from the Shan-Shang Public Market 在山上公有零售市場正對面 is this popsicle shop, 有家冰枝店 and it is a bit of a local legend. In fact, it has been in operation for more than 68 years, 它已經連續營運超過68年了 and it's still going strong. There are a few specialties here that you have to try. One of which, is this pineapple-flavored shaved ice, 其中一個是鳳梨清冰 made with fresh pineapples, of course. Walking into the ice shop, 走入店中 the one thing that grabs your attention 最吸引目光的 is this 68 -year-old icemaker. It uses ammonia as a refrigerant within its tubing. I can say for sure, 我可以很確定地說 that there's only a handful of these machines left in Taiwan. 這種機器在臺灣應該所剩無幾 Man, this is great! It's very hard to describe, 其實蠻難解釋的 but the best way 但最貼切的應該是 I could put it is that this tastes exceedingly retro, 這吃起來超復古 but in a good way. I don't even remember the last time I had ice, 我已經不記得上次吃到冰 shaved ice that tastes like this. The pineapple flavor is very strong, but it's not too overwhelming. You can't see the pineapples in there. I guess it's been infused into the ice, 我想它應該已經跟冰合而為一了 and the texture is very, very smooth and delicate. So, in a way, it's kind of like traveling back in time, 當你吃這個冰的時候 when you eat this shaved ice. First, I don't use artificial flavoring. 第一點 我的東西沒香料 It's all pure. This insistence brings out the retro taste. If you were to change it, 如果今天你改變了它 it'd be different. Yes, it'd be different. So, you don't feel like adding a bunch of random ingredients. 妳不想加些有的沒有的 No, I don't 沒有 我不加那些 Keeping it simple. 最簡單的 It's the simplicity, 所以簡單的 and the purity. You have to answer your customers 你要能回答客人 The customers would say: 客人說 Aunty Yen, 阿燕姨啊 your ice is delicious. So, this makes you happy. 對啊 This makes me happy. You said this shop has been running for 68 years? 妳說這家店開68年了 In the same location? Did it move? No, no, no. 沒沒沒 It's always been here. 都在這個地方 For 68 years… 68年都…… 68 years in the same location. 68年都在這裡 都沒變 This is incredible. This is their house specialty. It's got three different colors, 總共有三色 so, naturally it's got three different ingredients. That's sweet and condensed milk. The brown stuff? That's chocolate. But it's this orange stuff that sets it apart. 不是柳橙口味 It's not pumpkin-flavored. It's not even cantaloupe-flavored. This is in fact, salted duck eggs-flavored. Now, that may sound a bit strange, 這聽起來或許很怪 but it actually works quite well together. This ice shop in Shanshang 在山上區的這間冰店 is a memory shared by its people. To insist on doing the same thing for 68 years 能夠這樣堅持同一件事情68年 is no easy feat. It's rare to see an old and traditional establishment staying true to its heritage. I'm touched to see how Aunty Yen is still using her passion 很感動阿姨用她的熱情 to create even more fond memories for us all. 為大家創造珍貴的回憶 Within Taiwanese culture, 在臺灣文化中, traditional religions are almost omnipresent, 傳統信仰是不可或缺的存在 and many festivities or celebrations have strong religious ties. The deities people worship here all hold unique positions, 而臺灣拜的神明也都有各自的職位 giving blessings to things like education, wellbeing and love life. Because of this, temples can be found almost everywhere. Like most places in Tainan, Shanshang has its fair share of temples and shrines. This one, in particular, is Kailing Temple. It was first built in the 1760s. What sets it apart from the other temples in the area? Rumor has it that this temple actually worships a tree. It's a golden shower tree, in fact. So, let's go and check it out. After the general passed away, 將軍過世了以後 he manifested himself to the villagers, 他向村上的民眾顯靈 requesting that they worship a tree in the village. So, in a way, this tree is the embodiment of the general, 所以這棵樹可以說是這位將軍的化身 and people still worship it to this day. So, this is the tree behind the temple, 這就是廟後方的那棵樹 and it can be seen as the embodiment of the general himself. It's quite the amazing sight to behold, 看起來真的很壯觀 and in the summer months, 在夏季時 it would actually bloom this fantastic yellow and golden flower. And just to think that, 單只要想到 it's been 300 years, 已經過了300年 and this tree still stands in the village, 這棵樹依然豎立在村內 guarding over its people. One thing that I like about Taiwanese temples is its architecture. In fact, here we can see koji pottery work along its outer fringes. And up top, we've got this very intricate ceramic and glass collage. The original temple was built in 1764. Since then, it's been through several renovation projects. That's why it still looks so new. There was a community announcement made earlier 稍早有社區廣播 through the speakerphones, somewhere. It's like hiding somewhere, 真的不知藏在哪兒 about a bread truck approaching. And apparently, this same bread truck has been selling bread here 聽說這台麵包車來這裡賣麵包 for more than 25 years. So, in a way, this plaza in front of the temple 所以這片廟前廣場 can be seen as a community gathering place, 可以說是社區的集會中心 of all sorts of activities. I just bought some bread, 我剛買了一點麵包 and I'm really hungry. So, I'm going to dig in. Every city and county in Taiwan has its own signature fruit. In the 2014 Dragon fruit Competition The farmers in Shanshang won first place in the category for red dragon fruits. Therefore, it's easy to see 想必火龍果在山上區 just how important the dragon fruit is to Shanshang. The people of Shanshang take their fruits very seriously, 山上的人非常重視火龍果 and once a year, they would hold a fruit-themed celebration. So, you've got your Pineapple Day, 有鳳梨節 you got your Avocado Day. And a few years ago, they had the Dragon fruit Day, 前幾年他們也有火龍果節 in order to commemorate and celebrate these awesome fruits. The dragon fruit has a Central and South American origin, It had a very strong cultural connection with the Aztec and Mayan culture. They would even plant it right next to their sacred temples. The Dutch brought the fruit to Taiwan in 1645, 荷蘭人在1645年把火龍果帶到臺灣來 but it wasn't grown in number until much later on. When the fruit was introduced to Vietnam, 當這種水果被引進越南 the people there also viewed it as a very auspicious fruit. It could be seen in many religious ceremonies and festivities. Now this is my favorite part of talking about fruits. It's the eating part. I'm going to dig in. Man, to say its super sweet would be an understatement. But it's not too overwhelming, 但它也不會太誇張 and it still has that very fragrant fruit taste. 而且還保有果香味 Sometimes, some fruits, 有時候 有的水果 when they become too sweet, 當它們變得太甜 you end up losing that natural fruity taste. But this thing still has it. 但這個還保有它 By the way, 對了 as a friendly reminder. Do not get this stuff on your shirt, 不要把它弄到你的衣服上了 it's very difficult to wash off. Also, do wipe your mouth after eating the dragon fruit, 吃完火龍果也記得要擦嘴巴 because if you don't, you are going to end up looking like a vampire. If you are a fruit lover like myself, 若你跟我一樣都是「愛果人士」 and find yourself in Shanshang, 然後哪天你經過山上 make sure to pick up some awesome dragon fruits, 記得要來買些超讚的火龍果 if they are in season, of course! 當然產季要對啦! and if not, they have other stuff as well, 若不是盛產季 他們也有別的東西 like pineapples, papayas and avocados. 山上區是一個充滿歷史的地方, There are heritage sites, 擁有古蹟, and beautiful natural scenery. The view along Zenwen River is also very pretty. Come for a stroll and take in the sunset. Bring along your lover, family and friends 帶著你的伴侶、家人、朋友, as you indulge in a great and leisurely day.
