I've got to see if I can get down.
That's the tough part.
I can't.
Hey, that's pretty good, Jack.
That's better than I can do.
Jack Welch.
Jack Welch.
Jack.
My name is Jack Welch.
I'm chairman and chief executive officer of General Electric.
Widely praised as a modern management genius.
Thank you.
Please welcome Jack Welch, the only man alive
who can catch Warren Buffett's fastball.
What's the best piece of advice that you can give
someone who would just love to tap into you right now?
One word: Overdeliver.
If I ask you to do something, I've already got in mind
what I'm thinking I'd like you to do.
You've got to do that plus make me smarter.
So the job of any working professional out there
who wants to move up in the ranks, make your boss
smarter, always do more than you're asked for, don't
just do the homework assignment, do more.
Crawl your way out.
Get out of the pile, I always call it.
Do something that's different.
Everyone is a mentor.
You see somebody speak, and you say, "I like the way
that person speaks."
And you sort of adapt your way of doing it.
And then if you are authentic.
Authenticity is such a value that people lose sight of.
Learn from everybody, but be yourself.
Translate it into your way of doing things, not making
yourself somebody you're not.
The first day you get the job is the beginning, not the end.
If you've got a boss and your boss is not recognizing
your contributions, you've got to have the
self-confidence to get in and say, "What do I have to
do? What am I doing wrong?"
Bring candor to the party right away.
Develop a dialogue.
If that doesn't work, you've got to have the
self-confidence to pack your bags and try it somewhere
else because going around your boss is a losing
strategy. It's not going to work.
So you've got to make peace there by, again,
overdelivering. If you're giving a manager above you,
making them smarter every day, making them look good
with their bosses, the world will turn out pretty good for you.
Winning is good.
Winning is really good.
Winning is wonderful.
