There's no better feeling than being able to solve the impossible. [Walt Howard, manager, Product Development Group, Boeing Commercial Airplanes] For a 737, it's very hard to find areas to improve, so a percent and a half is remarkable especially just with the wing tip. A winglet is a device used to help improve the aerodynamic characteristic of the overall wing. It makes the airplane more efficient. The wing itself--it's got to carry the load no matter what and it's just changing how the load gets carried. The original addition of a winglet was on the order of 3.5 to 4% improvement, depending on the length of the mission, and we're looking at improving that up to another 1.5% in fuel burn. The change that the advanced technology wing really brings is a radical departure from what we've done in the past. It has features to it that you won't see anywhere else on any other airplane. It's a differentiator. It's kind of got this aggressive, yet eye-appealing nature to it. It's the most obvious thing you're going to see with the MAX [737 MAX]. The airlines all over the world will save millions of gallons of fuel with this concept. Carbon emissions will be greatly reduced and the environmental impact is going to be substantial because 737s fly multiple times a day. [737 Flight Tracker] It's the most popular airplane out there. As a person, it's a great feeling to know that we're impacting and having a positive impact on the world. Boeing
