  • OFFICER: Sophia, how old are you?

  • SOPHIA: 17.

  • I literally never even carried weed before me until today.

  • OFFICER: OK, listen to me.

  • - I don't want to go to jail, please.

  • OFFICER: I understand you don't want to.

  • [MUSIC - INNER CIRCLE, "BAD BOYS"]

  • (SINGING) Bad boys!

  • Whatcha want, whatcha want, whatcha

  • gonna do when Sheriff John Brown come for you.

  • OFFICER: The park is known for people hanging out there,

  • especially young juveniles, teenagers.

  • So we rolled up to check out what was going on there.

  • We saw the white sedan.

  • I made contact with the female driver

  • and noticed that there was a male passenger.

  • They were very cooperative with me.

  • When I asked them for their information.

  • I also asked for permission to search the vehicle.

  • I smelled the odor of marijuana, like that.

  • So right now all I have is this little marijuana roach.

  • If it's just that, we'll probably

  • document that they had drug paraphernalia,

  • and then let them go.

  • They either one of them have any records as of right now,

  • and it gives them a positive outlook on law enforcement.

  • We'll see if there's anything else.

  • We'll look through the bag, make sure there's

  • nothing illegal in the bag.

  • OK.

  • There's a handgun.

  • The passenger left a backpack, his backpack inside the car.

  • I informed him what I found so he could sit in the car

  • and just kind of understand the gravity of the situation.

  • I walked over to the female.

  • She started getting a little emotional.

  • I could tell she was scared.

  • She didn't really know what was going to happen to her.

  • - I just want to know what's going

  • to happen with my parents.

  • Because I want to get home.

  • I don't want my parents to find out--

  • - Well, as of right now, you're going

  • to be charged with possession of marijuana.

  • And as of right now, he's going to be charged

  • with possession of a firearm.

  • - How 'bout me?

  • What do I do?

  • - I just told you.

  • - Yeah, but tell me what I do.

  • Are my parents going to find out about this?

  • - They're going to know that you went to jail, yeah,

  • if I end up arresting--

  • - Don't arrest me, please, I've never even

  • had weed on me before.

  • This is the first time ever.

  • - It's a very minute amount of marijuana.

  • There was kind of just really enough to test it to actually

  • make sure it was marijuana.

  • So officer discretion, I felt that it would be better

  • to have her parents deal with her in this situation,

  • rather than have the law enforcement officer step in.

  • I understand that she's never been in trouble.

  • I think that we could leave this to the parents.

  • - I understand, I understand.

  • OFFICER: I understand that this is just the beginning of--

  • she's obviously getting into the wrong crowd,

  • you get what I'm saying?

  • [CELL PHONE BEEPS]

  • - Oh, my god, it's my husband calling, he's going to kill me.

  • Can I just go home?

  • I'm gonna take to her--

  • I'm gonna to take her down, I'm gonna talk to her.

  • - As for the male, he really didn't have a good explanation.

  • He said that he was walking with some friends

  • and he found it in the bushes.

  • You know, I explained to him, why

  • are you not thinking about what you're doing before you do it?

  • You know, you can't just pick up a firearm

  • that you find on the side of the road.

  • What you have in the car tonight is

  • an 18-year-old boy is unacceptable.

  • You have no idea whose it was, if it was stolen.

  • If it's a murder weapon?

  • What this is for you is this is a learning experience.

  • Every action has a consequence,

  • He seemed generally upset.

  • But the question is, was he upset that he got caught?

  • Or was he upset that he actually did something wrong?

  • We have a huge issue with juveniles and handguns

  • out here, and we consider this a win-win.

  • You get a gun off the street.

  • You put a kid in jail.

  • Hopefully, it's a learning experience for him.

  • And you just hope for the best.

  • OFFICER: Is this decent stuff or is it kind of ditch weed?

  • GIRL: It's reggie.

  • OFFICER: It's what?

  • GIRL: It's reggie, like regular weed.

  • OFFICER: Oh, OK.

  • GIRL: Normal.

  • OFFICER: Well, I've got bad news.

  • You got to go to jail tonight.

  • GIRL: OK.

  • OFFICER: Just bring your hands up away from your body.

  • Wow, I don't even know if the cuffs will fit on you.

OFFICER: Sophia, how old are you?
