and a very warm welcome to this tutorial, which is Verbal Reasoning Test questions.

So, if you have a verbal reasoning test coming up, this tutorial will make a huge difference

I'm going to tell you what verbal reasoning tests are, I am going to give you some great

tips for scoring highly, and more importantly, I'm going to go through a number of sample

test questions and get you to try some yourself!

The aim is, by the time you and I get to the end of this video tutorial, you will be fully

prepared for your verbal reasoning, test and project into those very warm welcome to this

verbal reasoning test.

about 20 years now.

So, what is a verbal reasoning test?

A verbal reasoning test basically assesses your ability to answer questions as even TRUE,

FALSE or CANNOT SAY based solely on the information or the text provided.

You are given a passage of text.

You are then given a question and you have to answer that question based solely on that

information.

So, this is very important.

This is the first crucial step in helping you to pass a verbal reasoning test.

You can only answer the questions based on the information that is provided.

And I will explain in more detail what I mean about that in a second.

So let's take a look at a sample verbal reasoning test question.

It says: read the following passage before answering the question that follows.

We are given a passage of text and then a question appears and we have to answer that

question as either TRUE, FALSE or CANNOT SAY.

Let me just quickly read this passage of text.

Now, the text that you are given is usually quite boring in nature and is designed to

be so.

Okay, but there is a really important tip which I am going to show you in the next slide

of how to save time and answer these questions quickly.

So I'll quickly read that text.

It says: A uniform is a set of standard clothing worn by members of an organisation whilst

participating in that organisation’s activity.

Modern uniforms are often worn by armed forces and paramilitary organisations such as; police,

emergency services and security guards, in some workplaces and schools and by inmates

in prisons.

In some countries, officials also wear uniforms in some of their duties; such is the case

of the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service or the French Prefects.

And then the question is “Police officers are required to wear a uniform.

TRUE or FALSE or CANNOT SAY?”

Now, we can only answer that question based solely on the information.

Now, you and I know for a fact that police officers are required to wear a uniform.

However, the answer is CANNOT SAY, because we cannot say from that text.

It doesn't say it anywhere, that police officers are required to wear a uniform – it actually

says, “modern uniforms are often worn.”

Okay, so that's the important thing.

The answer to the question is CANNOT SAY based on the information that you are given.

So many candidates, and this is where you are going to score higher than your competitors,

is that many candidates will answer this question as TRUE, because we all know that police officers

do, in fact, wear a uniform.

But crucially, the word required is not mentioned in that passage.

And it says police officers are required.

So don't fall into the trap with these verbal reasoning test questions of answering the

questions based on what you know, only answer them based on what is within the passage!

The important lesson here is to only answer the question based solely on the information

provided, regardless of what you know to be fact.

Now, here's the really important tip.

To read and fully understand every word of every verbal reasoning test passage, is going

to take time, and ultimately, it will eat into the time you have to answer each question.

So you're going to be answering these questions based on the strict time conditions.

Here's a really useful tip.

The majority of people, and I would estimate 95 percent of candidates who undertake verbal

reasoning tests, will start off and they will read that whole passage.

That's not what you should do.

OK.

What you should do is scan the passage to locate the word or words that are prominent

in the question, and then answer the question that way.

So, I would look at this and I would not even read the text.

I would look at the question.

And it says – “police officers are required to wear a uniform.”

I would then pick out the PROMINENT two words, ‘police officers’ and ‘uniform’.

I would then scan the passage to locate those two words – there’s POLICE and there's

UNIFORM.

I would then focus my efforts entirely on that passage.

That particular part.

And if you see from that, I can answer that question.

Police officers are required to wear a uniform.

Uniforms are often worn by armed forces and paramilitary organizations.

It doesn't say they are REQUIRED to.

So, I would answer the question CANNOT SAY - that is a great tip.

If you take anything from this tutorial in respect of answering verbal reasoning test

questions, take that.

That will save you a huge amount of time, because when you are under pressure, you are

reading that passage and you will be able to understand it anyway, because you'll be

under pressure.

Your job is to just pick out the answer from that particular element of the passage.

Here's a quick refresher and reminder of what is meant by TRUE, FALSE and CANNOT SAY.

This is very important.

So please do listen to all three of these, and then I'm going to get you to try some

questions yourself to see whether you understand what true, false and cannot say is in the

context of verbal reasoning.

TRUE.

If something is true, it means the statement is true.

It is verified by the text.

This means the text must explicitly or implicitly mention something which proves the statement

to be correct.

So in other words, you cannot make any assumptions about the text.

There's got to be either direct evidence from the statement or a strong inference to support.

So in respect to FALSE, if a statement is false, there must be evidence in the text

which contradicts the statement.

So for example, if the question statements say, “all swans are white’, but the texts

say, “there is such thing as a black swan”, then the statement is FALSE because it is

directly contradicted by the text.

And in respect of CANNOT SAY, there is not enough evidence in the text or the passage

to verify it being true or false, then the correct answer is CANNOT SAY, as we know from

the previous question about police officers wearing a uniform.

Now it's your turn.

I'm going to get you to try some verbal reasoning test questions.

So, there are five verbal reasoning test questions that follow.

You have 20 seconds to answer each question.

There is a timer on the right hand side, a blue timer.

I will read the question and the passage once, and then the timer starts to tick down.

marking and I’ll come on here each day and mark them for you, to make sure that you fully

understand.

Here we go.

It says: read the following text before answering the questions as either TRUE, FALSE or CANNOT

SAY from the information.

The five questions are based on this particular passage.

I'll read it once, and then I'll show you the five questions.

The timer will go down and I'll move on to the next question.

It's called ‘FAMILY HOLIDAY’ It says: Janet and Steve have been married for twenty-seven

years.

They have a daughter called Jessica who is twenty-five-years-old.

They all want to go on holiday together but cannot make up their minds on where to go.

Janet’s first choice would be somewhere hot and sunny abroad.

Her second choice would be somewhere in their home country that involves a sporting activity.

She does not like hill-climbing or walking holidays but her third choice would be a skiing

holiday.

Steve’s first choice would be a walking holiday in the hills somewhere in their home

country and his second choice would be a sunny holiday abroad.

He does not enjoy skiing.

Jessica’s first choice would be a skiing holiday and her second choice would be a sunny

holiday abroad.

Jessica’s third choice would be a walking holiday in the hills of their home country.

So, you can see it's quite confusing.

And that's why it's important to not read the text out, but to answer the question.
