  • welcome.

  • We're gonna have such a fun time.

  • We're learning about daylight savings time.

  • Four kids.

  • It's also called daylight saving Time in some places, and it's also called just summertime.

  • In some countries, they call this idea this daylight savings time idea summertime.

  • So it goes by a lot of different names, but it's an interesting thing a lot of adults don't even understand.

  • And you're about to figure it out and it's gonna be so cool.

  • Even though it can go buy those other names in this video, we're gonna be calling it Daylight Savings Time.

  • Okay, Daylight Savings time.

  • That's what it's commonly called in the United States, Canada and Australia.

  • So what is daylight savings time?

  • What happens when we have daylight savings time?

  • Well, it's actually fairly simple.

  • Daylight savings time is when we move all of our clocks ahead by one hour.

  • It's like we skip an hour in the United States and Canada.

  • Daylight savings time begins on the second Sunday of March.

  • Daylight savings time ends on the first Sunday of November in the United States and Canada, so basically, you move the clocks ahead one hour on the second Sunday of March, and then you move the clocks back on the first Sunday of November.

  • As we mentioned earlier, Daylight savings time is observed in other places in the world often called by different names.

  • And it happens at different times, not necessarily on the second Sunday of March, ending on the first Sunday of November.

  • It happens at other times, in different places in the world.

  • Now you might be wondering, Why do we even bother doing this?

  • Why do we move the clocks ahead for nine months and then just move them back?

  • That's actually a very difficult question to answer.

  • The man who is credited with the idea of daylight savings time is this guy, George Hudson.

  • He lived in New Zealand, where he would collect bugs.

  • Yeah, you would collect all kinds of bugs and rare bugs.

  • In fact, you can see some of the same bugs that he collected in a museum today in New Zealand.

  • He really valued the daylight hours because collecting bugs is a lot easier when the sun is out.

  • So in 18 95 he proposed that we moved the clocks ahead, and his original idea was moving the clocks ahead by two hours instead of just one.

  • So Bugs bugs were the reason why at least George Hudson wanted the clocks to be moved forward.

  • Let's face it, though.

  • In the spring and summer, people enjoy the fact that the sun is out longer.

  • Thea Other benefit people think of with daylight savings time is that it reduces energy costs.

  • Years ago it did.

  • But today, a lot of people don't spend time outdoors as much.

  • They stay indoors, which means they spend almost the same amount of energy.

  • A lot of other people think while it helps farmers.

  • But farmers usually get up early in the morning anyway, so they're not really gaining an hour.

  • And a lot of them don't appreciate how it messes up their schedule, especially with their animals.

  • The truth is, just like with George Hudson, the main benefit is you get more time in the evening, which means you have more time to explore Toby outside.

  • You know, daylight savings time might seem silly.

  • In fact, the states of Arizona in Hawaii refused to even do daylight savings time.

  • They're just like now it's not worth the not gonna do it, you know, we're just we're opting out, but especially if you spend time playing outside exercising and exploring your world daylight savings time is actually a really cool opportunity to have even more sunlight in the evening.

  • You might even be like George Hudson and find some really cool bugs.

  • Really cool bar.
