  • a CNN 10 returns from a three day weekend. 2

  • Hurricane Dorian is front and center on today's show. 3

  • I'm Carla Zeus. 4

  • Welcome, everyone watching around the world When we produced today's programme, scientists were it sure when or if Hurricane Dorian would make landfall in the mainland United States Monday night, the National Weather Service said it was an extremely dangerous Category four storm with wind speeds of 145 miles per hour. 5

  • It had weakened somewhat from when it hit the Bahamas on Sunday. 6

  • At that time, it was a Category five system, the strongest classifications with wind speeds of 180 miles per hour. 7

  • The independent island chain has seen a lot of hurricanes since recordkeeping began in the 18 hundreds. 8

  • But this is the first Category five storm known to strike the Bahamas, and it was still battering them last night. 9

  • That's one of the characteristics that make Hurricane Dori and unique. 10

  • It's been very slow moving as its eye. 11

  • The center of the storm passed over Grand Bahama Monday. 12

  • Hurricane Dorian was moving at one mile per hour. 13

  • You move it three miles per hour when you're walking, so this means the storm spends more time blasting buildings with its destructive winds and soaking land with its drenching rain. 14

  • Forecasters said 24 to 30 inches of rain was possible in some parts of the Bahamas, and that's in addition to flooding from the storm surge, the rise in sea water pushed ashore by hurricane winds. 15

  • The damage was expected to be catastrophic. 16

  • Another unusual thing about Dorian is that it's been hard to track. 17

  • Last week, meteorologists around the world expected the storm to meander west through the Atlantic and across the U. 18

  • S. 19

  • State of Florida. 20

  • As of last night there, models predicted it would turn north, staying about 50 miles off Florida's east coast but not actually making landfall. 21

  • CNN meteorologist says this will still bring hurricane force winds, storm surge and heavy rain to the state. 22

  • While its future is a mystery, Hurricane Dorian's past has been deadly. 23

  • Hurricane Dorian unleashed its fury on the Bahamas record setting storm, striking as a Category five hurricane leaving behind catastrophic destruction wind gust spiking over 200 miles per hour, becoming most powerful storm to hit the islands, Dorian shredding homes here in sending debris across neighborhoods. 24

  • This is property most saddened and worst day of my life to address the beaming people were facing Ah, Hurricane, Hurricane Dorian that why not be that we're seeing in the history of Bahamas heavy rains creating blinding conditions, Some towns submerged in floodwaters? 25

  • Dorian making landfall in the Abaco Islands on Sunday, leaving utter devastation. 26

  • Please, I beg you people trying to make it to the other side with this white houses. 27

  • But some people, um, water just took them and those only people that got to make it over there Some people they get making those horrifying scenes were playing again and again across the Bahamas. 28

  • This hole is getting bigger with the scale of instruction now coming to light. 29

  • Haunting images showing Hurricane Dorian's dangerous power is it now takes aim at the U. 30

  • S. 31

  • Coastline. 32

  • Patrick Ottman, CNN, Freeport, Bahamas Tropical systems come in all shapes and sizes. 33

  • You have tropical depressions, tropical storms, and once it is strong enough to become a hurricane, you have five categories. 34

  • Category five being the strongest, the state's most frequently hit by a hurricane Florida, Louisiana and Texas. 35

  • But as much as we know about hurricanes, forecasting them is still a challenge Justus. 36

  • We name each storm. 37

  • Each storm has its own personality, like Katrina in 2005 which intensified rapidly overnight, going from a Category three to a Category five, it became the fourth most intense hurricane on record. 38

  • As of that time in the forecast track can change dramatically, like Erica and 2015. 39

  • Or a system that can be viewed as relatively weak, like a tropical storm could end up like Tropical Storm Allison. 40

  • In 2001 the remnants of the storm stalled over Southeast Texas, stumping 35 inches of rain over Houston. 41

  • In just five days, the storm became the first non hurricane toe have its name retired. 42
