  • >> Stephen: HEY, EVERYBODY!

  • WE'RE BACK HERE WITH JAMES TAYLOR.

  • I HAPPEN TO KNOW YOU WERE ON STAGE PERFORMING DURING THE MOON

  • LANDING.

  • >> YES, THAT'S TRUE.

  • >> Stephen: WHERE WAS THAT?

  • AND THIS IS NOT IN THE MEMOIR.

  • DO YOU MIND SHARING THAT?

  • I'VE NOT ACTUALLY HEARD THE STORY, BUT I HEARD THIS

  • HAPPENED.

  • >> YES.

  • IT WAS IN 1969.

  • >> Stephen: I'M FAMILIAR.

  • ( LAUGHTER ) >> I WAS BOOKED TO PLAY THE NEW

  • PORT FOLK FESTIVAL WITH AN AMAZING CAST OF OTHER

  • ENTERTAINERS.

  • IT WAS A VERY STAR-STUDDED YEAR.

  • BUT IT WAS ONE OF MY FIRST -- IT CERTAINLY WAS THE LARGEST

  • AUDIENCE I HAD PLAYED TO UP UNTIL THAT TIME, AND IT MAY HAVE

  • BEEN LIKE THE FOURTH OR FIFTH GIG THAT I PLAYED.

  • YOU KNOW, IT WAS QUITE EARLY ON.

  • BUT IT WAS A FULL MOON, IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT, AND WHILE I WAS

  • ON STAGE, GEORGE WEAN, WHO WAS THE PROMOTER OF THAT FESTIVAL

  • AND STILL IS, AT THE AGE OF 94, GEORGE WALKED OUT ON STAGE AND

  • SAID, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, HUMAN BEINGS HAVE JUST STEPPED

  • ON TO THE MOON.

  • >> Stephen: IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR SET.

  • >> AND THERE IT WAS JUST HANGING UP THERE IN THE SKY.

  • >> Stephen: OH, THE MOON WAS OUT.

  • >> AND I SAID, YEAH, RIGHT.

  • ( LAUGHTER ) ( APPLAUSE )

  • THANK YOU, GEORGE.

  • >> Stephen: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO

  • WRITE SONGS OUT THERE?

  • >> YEAH.

  • UM, YOU KNOW, CHOOSE A SONG THAT YOU LIKE, AND THEN REWRITE IT,

  • BUT JUST WRITE NEW CHORDS TO IT AND DIFFERENT LYRICS BUT SORT OF

  • KEEP THE TRAJECTORY OF THE SONG, YOU KNOW.

  • >> Stephen: SO WHO WERE YOU REWRITING WHEN YOU WERE FIRST

  • WRITING SONGS?

  • >> WELL, I DIDN'T TAKE THAT ADVICE.

  • ( LAUGHTER ) ( APPLAUSE )

  • >> Stephen: YOU WERE ACCIDENTALLY ORIGINAL.

  • >> THAT'S RIGHT.

  • BUT I -- WELL, YOU KNOW, I WAS EMULATING PEOPLE THAT I THOUGHT

  • WERE GOOD.

  • BUT I DID ONCE TRY TO WRITE A SONG THAT WAY.

  • I TOOK A BEATLES SONG "TREAT ME LIKE YOU DID THE NIGHT BEFORE"

  • AND I WROTE A SONG CALLED "TURN AWAY."

  • >> Stephen: OKAY, I WILL GO LISTEN TO THOSE BACK-TO-BACK.

  • >> THEY'RE NOTHING LIKE EACH OTHER, BUT IT REALLY DOES WORK,

  • THOUGH.

  • YOU TAKE A LONG SONGTHAT YOU LIKE AND THEN YOU JUST REARRANGE

  • IT, GIVE IT A DIFFERENT MELODY, DIFFERENT LYRICS.

  • YOU CAN COME CLOSE.

  • YOU MUSTN'T ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, STEAL IT.

  • ( LAUGHTER ) >> Stephen: JUST BORROW IT.

  • JUST USE IT AS SORT OF A TEMPLATE, AS IT WERE, YEAH.

  • >> Stephen: JAMES, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.

  • "BREAK SHOT" IS AVAILABLE ON AUDIBLE NOW.

  • JAMES TAYLOR, EVERYBODY!

  • WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

>> Stephen: HEY, EVERYBODY!
