The world-famous Giant Duck currently in northern Taiwan has exploded. It happened just before
a large number of people gathered around it to count in the new year. The 18-metre-tall
yellow duck was being shown at Keelung, but suddenly burst.
Organisers believe the weather was to blame. Sunshine appeared on Tuesday after days of
rainy weather in Keelung, which caused temperatures to rise and pressure inside the rubber duck
to build. That finally led to the explosion. After hearing about the incident the duck's
designer Florentijn Hofman said it was incredible.
In order to comfort tourists, who had come out to see it, Keelung will display a Vietnamese
duck from Saturday at the same place. The Giant Duck has travelled to 13 cities in nine
countries since 2007.
