Narrator: Careers in engineering are dynamic and diverse. Engineers use maths and science
to solve world problems. They also need to be great communicators, with strong interpersonal
skills. Dean of Engineering, Professor Scott Smith.
[Professor Scott Smith Dean of Engineering]
Professor Scott Smith: Engineering, is problem solving. At a deeper level, engineering would
be about understanding the laws of nature and using those laws to create solutions for
the betterment of humanity.
Narrator: Through its School of Environment, Science and Engineering, Southern Cross University
teaches undergraduate degrees in civil and mechanical engineering at its state-of-the-art
science and engineering precinct.
Professor Andrew Rose: This bit of equipment here replicates one of the classic experiments
in fluid dynamics.
Narrator: A feature of SCU's engineering degrees is the great access students have to their
lecturers.
[Arthur Hyde Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil
Engineering]
Arthur Hyde: It's got really small class sizes so you can just go up to your teacher after
or before a lecture and they'll know you by name, you'll know them and they really get
a feel for how you progress through a course.
Narrator: Course content is contemporary and future focused.
[Professor Jerry Vanclay, Head of School, Environment, Science and Engineering]
Professor Jerry Vanclay: One of the unique things we've got in our engineering program
is we've got a strand that concentrates on environmental engineering, I think that's
going to be an interesting area for the future.
Narrator: The 4 year honours degrees equip students for global careers.
Professor Scott Smith: Engineering graduates are in very high demand. There's work locally,
there's also work nationally and there's work internationally. Certainly an engineering
degree is a very transferable degree that can be applied all around the world.
Narrator: All engineering students at SCU undertake professional work placements with
a range of employers. Corelle Foster is undertaking her professional experience with Leighton
Contractors.
Corelle Foster: I get to work part-time while I'm studying and also during my vacation breaks
or in my study breaks can actually tack on a few extra days work. Working has been fantastic
with the learning, because everything I learn I get to put into practice and I also see
things that when I'm actually learning about them I can actually ask more in-depth questions
and get a deeper learning, which is great.
Narrator: Southern Cross also offers the Master of Engineering Management, fully online and
with six intake periods the Master of Engineering Management is perfect for the busy professional.
